Board Game Cycle
I’ve been busy for the past year with a variety of things1, which has delayed additional posts to this blog. But, now that things have hopefully? settled down a bit, I’ve decided to embark on a project with my wife - to go through our collection of board games (almost all of which are my fault) and give them a whirl. I’ve built up a fairly decent-sized collection, and my own experience with board games is deeper than my wife’s, so this is an opportunity for her to broaden her horizons in this space (and it also gives me a chance to play more board games during these crazy times). The idea is to go through them alphabetically and give them all a couple of playthroughs. Additional guidelines:
- The game must support 2 players (if there happens to be interested guests at the time, it can go higher), so nothing like, say, Apples to Apples2. It doesn’t necessarily have to support them well, although it’s always appreciated.
- We’ll generally be aiming for 2 full games. This will get adjusted on a per-game basis, so for more complex games, there might be a partial game we abort in order to get the rules down, and for longer games (such as those which require multiple sessions for a single game), we may only do one playthrough.
- For campaign games, we might do a partial campaign, or if the game supports it, non-campaign scenarios.
- The first game will be closer to a base game, where additional games will have expansions (if available).
- Games which are essentially palette swapped variants are treated as a single game (e.g. different maps sold as different games, Pathfinder Adventure Card Game or Arkham Horror: The Card Game campaigns, etc.).
Thoughts will, of course, be posted here.
1 This includes Atlassian deciding to leave the self-hosted space, which blew away my plan to go to Confluence; as a side effect, I’ve also had to convert every post by hand back to XWiki, so there may be some conversion errors here and there.
2 Not actually a serious example, although I do own a copy.
